Ancient Cave Chests
Contents
Providence
- On B21 to B98, it is placed in one of the floor's chests (you cannot tell which by looking)
- At most one appears per floor
- The deeper the floor, the higher the chance (see the table below)
- From B60 on, it always appears
- You can pick up only one per dive; after that, it no longer appears
- If you leave Providence behind and go to the next floor, it appears again there
- When an Iris Treasure appears on a floor, Providence does not
Providence Chances
| Floor | Chance |
|---|---|
| B21–B25 | 35.2–41.8% |
| B26–B30 | 43.4–50.0% |
| B31–B35 | 52.0–58.6% |
| B36–B40 | 60.2–66.8% |
| B41–B45 | 68.4–75.0% |
| B46–B50 | 77.0–83.6% |
| B51–B55 | 85.2–91.8% |
| B56–B59 | 93.4–98.4% |
| B60–B98 | 100.0% |
Not reduced by the chance (up to about 2%) that an Iris Treasure takes the slot first
Iris Treasures
- It appears at the same chance on every floor from B1 to B98
- It is placed in one of the floor's chests (you cannot tell which by looking)
- The chance per floor is about 2% (5/256)
- Each of the 9 treasures is picked at nearly the same chance
- If the picked treasure was already taken home or already appeared this dive, it counts as a miss (there is no re-pick from the rest)
- So the more Iris Treasures you collect, the harder it gets to find a new one
- If you miss a treasure that appeared, that treasure will not appear again that dive
- If you have taken none home yet, about 1.7 appear on average over B1 to B98
- Once all 9 are taken home, no more appear
- When all 10 display spots are filled, including the one for defeating the Master, the keeper's line changes
Iris Treasure Chances
| Count | Per floor |
|---|---|
| #1 | 1.95% |
| #2 | 1.74% |
| #3 | 1.52% |
| #4 | 1.30% |
| #5 | 1.09% |
| #6 | 0.87% |
| #7 | 0.65% |
| #8 | 0.43% |
| #9 | 0.22% |
Chance that one of the treasures not yet taken home appears. The nine are picked at 29/256 or 28/256, so the value shifts slightly by which remain.

Other Equipment: 185 kinds (17.6%)
- One item is picked from the list at equal chances
- The list changes by floor
- Equipment goes on the list the same way as weapons: priced under 1000 × (floor + 1)
- Unlike weapons, armor, shields, helmets, rings, and jewels share one list
- Up to B9, one item is picked from the list at equal chances
- From B10, a ROM bug limits picks to the first few items on the list
- The list starts with cheap armor, so only armor appears from B10 on
- B10 always gives an Apron
- Shields, helmets, rings, and jewels appear only on B1–B9
- Items that are candidates but never picked show “-” for floors
- Bug: From B10, shields, helmets, rings, and jewels do not appear

How Chest Contents Are Decided
Steps
- The number of chests (0 to 8) is set
- Of the chests placed, only one gets an Iris Treasure roll (about 2%)
- If the roll hits, one of the 9 Iris Treasures is picked (about 11% each)
- If that treasure has not been obtained and has not yet appeared this dive, it goes into the chest (if it already appeared and was missed, the roll is a miss)
- If the Iris Treasure roll misses, the Providence roll comes next
- If you do not have Providence and the floor is B21 or deeper, only one of the chests placed gets a Providence roll (about 35% on B21, rising with depth, 100% from B60)
- If an Iris Treasure or Providence went in, the remaining chests are rolled; otherwise all chests are
- The chest type is decided (weapon 32.0%, restorative 22.7%, other equipment 17.6%, other item 14.1%, spell 11.7%, blue chest 2.0%)
- Once the type is set, another roll picks one item from that type's table
- These rolls repeat for each chest placed
Notes
- A chest is blue only when its type is a blue chest; otherwise it is red
- Blue chest candidates do not change by floor (all 41 are candidates on every floor)
- The candidates for weapons and other equipment depend on the floor; deeper floors add more expensive gear
- A spell becomes a restorative if it is already known
- Chest contents are set when you enter the floor and do not depend on the order you open them
